THE RANDOM FACTS MEME

1! Post with your character(s) and share some random facts about them. Headcanon, canon, whatever.
2! Respond to other people's characters responding to said random facts or asking them questions about things you want to know about them! Ask about their childhood, their favorite book, preferred brand of underwear...
3! Answer the questions people ask! You could just answer it normally, or you could also go into ridiculous detail, or write a drabble or something! You could illustrate how they got that scar in MS Paint! Just answer the questions okay.
4! ????
5! Profit!

The trick is that around 1787, we were running out of magic. The most advanced practitioners had incredibly hard times casting the simplest spells and soon magic was going to be gone forever. However, they found that in a world adjacent to our own, there was a vast source of magic power. In a major ritual, they managed to rip a hole in dimensions, creating a vast portal into this other world. The ritual itself was so violently powerful that it basically leveled the town and surrounding environs that they did it in.
Aaaaaanyhow, after a little bit, they start sending exploratory teams through, and find themselves in a vast, ancient city. This city is full of tons of stores advertising weird shit that was never imagined before (Death Surgeons, Mechanical Magic, etc). However, the whole place seems to be a ghost town. They explore and explore, yet find no signs of any habitation. What they *do* find is a strange glowing mineral which holds lots of magical power, and the name of the city: Malifaux.
This mineral is a godsend, as it can power spells, saving magic on Earth and pretty much revolutionizing the world. In a freak accident, it is discovered that they can be recharged if held in proximity of a dying person - hence their name, "soulstones."
For a couple of years, everything was looking up for the awesome (with the exception of some people discovering the secrets of necromancy in Malifaux, which is well, not a good thing), until one day in 1797. Suddenly, the Breach (the portal between worlds) began to shrink, and would not permit anything to cross through into Malifaux. People could hear screaming and the sounds of a battle on the other side. Finally, the sounds of battle silenced, and as the Breach drew to a close, a dead body was chucked through. This body had the word "Ours" carved into it.
Following this, a group of the world's wealthy and powerful magic users forms and begins to regulate the usage of soulstone, since the source was gone, and it is the only way to use magic now. This organization, the Guild, becomes cruel and power-hungry.
Anyhow, one hundred years later to the very minute, the Breach suddenly reopens. The Guild flips a shit and takes control of it. Once it becomes apparent that they aren't about to be attacked from the other side, they start sending in explorers, who find the signs of a struggle, but no bodies or blood or anything. Eventually the colonization of Malifaux begins again, but this time more carefully and with the Guild overseeing everything. Most settlers in Malifaux are indentured servants or convict labor.
Life in Malifaux comes with dangers, however, as if living with murderers and under terrible living conditions wasn't enough - necromancers are always lurking about, ready to kill you to make you an unwilling member of their army. Even worse are the Neverborn - monsters native to the world, and possibly the entities that wiped the first colonists out. They hate mankind and do everything they can to eradicate humanity from the world.
Another trick about Malifaux is that when you go through the Breach and are exposed to the powerful magical atmosphere of Malifaux, you develop magical talents. Some people develop stronger powers than others, and some of them form a movement to fight Guild oppression (which also becomes something of an organized crime group) called the Arcanist Movement. The Guild labels them all terrorists and criminals and hunts them down. This is where Sonnia comes in, as the head of the Witch Hunters department.
SO YEAH. Them's the basics.
